Separation

Up until the mid 20^th Century, the western world did not worry much about the significance to children of attachment to and separation from their mothers/parents, and how these affect the lives of separated children.

Separation can take many forms, such as:

• being dumped in an orphanage so parents can take a holiday;
• being removed from a dysfunctional family when there is no other option;
• being betrayed within an apparently stable home; or even
• the unthinkable displacement that follows military conflict.
