Up until the mid 20th Century, the western world did not worry much about the significance to children of attachment to and separation from their mothers/parents, and how these affect the lives of separated children.
Separation can take many forms, such as:
- being dumped in an orphanage so parents can take a holiday;
- being removed from a dysfunctional family when there is no other option;
- being betrayed within an apparently stable home; or even
- the unthinkable displacement that follows military conflict.
